Mole and Vole Removal

Moles and voles are perfectly content to take up residence in yards or fields; often causing catastrophic damage to plants, lawns and gardens. Anyone who has ever had property destroyed by moles or voles knows that they can be very destructive causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Voles:

Voles are commonly mistaken for other small animals such as mice, moles and shrews. They differ from other common backyard mammals in that they are primarily interested in eating the root systems of plants. By eating the succulent root systems and burrowing under plants or ground cover voles often destroy large amounts of vegetation in a short period of time. Bulbs planted in the ground are another favorite food source.

As a result of their exponential reproductive growth, vole populations can grow very large within a very short period of time. They can have five to 10 litters per year. Gestation lasts for about three weeks and the young voles reach sexual maturity in a month. Since litters average five to 10 young, a single pregnant vole can result in a hundred or more active voles in less than a year. Due to shallow tunnels and nests in underground chambers, most homeowners are unaware that their yards harbor significant vole populations until enormous damage has already been done.

Moles:

Unlike voles, moles will not eat plants, but they will inflict an equal amount of damage without ever spending much time above ground. These funny-looking mammals with oversized front paws are capable of digging tunnels at a rate of 18 feet per hour. A mole's diet primarily consists of earthworms and other small invertebrates found in the soil, as well as a variety of nuts. The mole tunnels, or runs, are in reality "worm traps." The mole senses when a worm falls into the tunnel and quickly moves to eat it. On their constant quests for meals, moles can disturb soil, damage the roots of plants, undermine walkways, and even uproot and kill entire lawns.
