Woodchuck Removal (Groundhogs)
Woodchucks, often called groundhogs, are hibernating, ground dwelling animals and are only encountered from spring through fall. Each spring the mother gives birth to 4-6 young. These large, ground dwelling animals can range from 5-15lbs. Woodchucks are docile and strictly vegetarian. They like to live in areas with a mixture of open ground and woods and are often seen on the roadside or near golf courses. When frightened, they emit a shrill whistle and dive into a burrow.
Some common signs of a woodchuck problem might include:
Burrow openings that are 6-10 inch diameter holes in the ground (may be hidden under porches or sheds or be right out in the middle of the lawn or pasture).
Paw tracks with four toes on the front paws and five toes on the back.
Often seen foraging, especially in the morning.
Garden or ornamental plant damage.
Woodchuck burrows are typically quite extensive. They are amazing diggers and create large intricate dens. These dens can be up to five feet deep and up to 30 feet long with several large chambers for living during the summer and hibernating in the winter. Other animals like woodchuck burrows too, so their presence may attract other unwanted pests such as raccoons and opossums. Their burrowing habits can be extremely damaging to lawns, cropland, and vegetation. Trying to block or fence them usually does not work since they will just re-dig or climb. Burrows may damage farm equipment and pose a danger to horses and riders.
Humane relocation is the only effective solution. Trapping begins early May and runs through October as these are the most active times for woodchuck and increases your likelihood for successful removal.
